The drive from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai in northern Thailand is filled with opportunities to experience Thai culture. Our four hour drive was leisurely so we were able to stop and see things along the way. We visited an elephant training center and some hill tribe villages. Many of these are refugee hilltribes that fled the political turmoil of neighboring Myanmar. They make their living by farming, weaving and selling handicrafts and trinkets.

We stopped at an overlook at the Golden Triangle, the area where three countries: Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet, at the confluence of the Mekong and Ruak Rivers. If the border is open, you can take a day trip over the bridge to the town of Tachilek in Myanmar. Here you will see the market filled with a huge variety of stalls selling everything from fruits and vegetables to "designer" jeans and purses. You can also observe the local village life, and visit a golden pagoda reminiscent of the famous pagodas you would see in Bagan. It's easy to cross the border, you just need your passport and 500 baht for a tourist visa.

Elephant polo, visits to temples, gardens and the unique Hall of Opium museum round out the activities available in and around Chiang Rai.

The Four Seasons Tented Camp is a unique resort made for the adventure-seeker who also has a requirement of luxury comforts. With only 15 tents, this is a very intimate lodge with each tent built into the hillside. The tents are exquisite and remind me of the luxury lodging I've seen in Southern Africa. They are beautifully furnished with leather furniture, hardwood floors, king beds and free-standing copper bathtubs. Some units have huge whirlpool tubs on the platform deck just outside the bedroom area. They are all set in the bamboo forest with fantastic views.

The experience starts as you are dropped off at the arrival area with a dock. You climb into a small, long-tailed boat and are ferried to the property on a scenic 10 minute ride. There is a lovely open-air restaurant where you take your meals, along with a bar at the opposite end of the resort used for pre-dinner and late evening cocktails. The spa is comprised of two massage pavilions, perched precariously off the side of the mountain. The rooms are beautiful with decks open to unobstructed views of the nature surrounding you.
A word of caution: you must be in fairly good physical condition and be able to navigate the many stairs involved in getting around this resort.

The Anantara resort is another great choice in the Golden Triangle. Set amongst jungle foliage, the rooms are housed in three-story buildings with lovely views of the valley below. In the morning I could hear the sound of elephants trumpeting as they took their morning baths! Amenities include a beautiful pool area, fitness room, and a full-service spa offering a huge variety of treatments.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Meridien Chiang Rai Resort. This hotel is located within the city of Chiang Rai along the banks of the Kok river. The rooms are very modern and comfortable. There are several dining venues to choose from - we enjoyed Favola, with its rustic Italian cuisine. The breakfast buffet is terrific with a huge variety of offerings. The resort pool is lovely and is a perfect place to relax after a long day of sightseeing.

Traveling through Thailand

Thailand is known as the "Land of Smiles". I found this to be a fitting phrase, as the people I met were so gracious and welcoming. The traditional greeting of "sawatdee" is usually accompanied by the greeter placing his or her hands in prayer position and giving a slight bow. It immediately puts you at ease makes you feel welcome.

Our adventure in Thailand started in Chiang Mai. This northern Thai city was founded in the late 13th century. Today is has a bustling downtown with a few high rise hotels and shops. The city really comes alive each evening with the night market. Here, vendors open their stalls lining the main street, selling everything from T-shirts to local handicrafts. I had heard about spas which offer Thai massages for the equivalent of $6.00. I did try a reflexology foot massage and my experience was "you get what you pay for", but I think it really depends on the individual therapist you end up with.

We had a terrific time just walking around, shopping and people watching. In and around Chiang Mai, we found beautiful silk scarves, silver jewelry, and all types of handicrafts.

During the day, you can spend your time visiting famous temples in the area. You can also visit factories and see how they make paper umbrellas, ceramics and woodcarvings.
A very popular activity is riding an elephant. There are several different elephant camps which offer elephant interactions, and we really enjoyed our morning at the Elephant Life Experience (ELE). Here, you can have a private day or half day with the elephants and their trainers (called mahouts). We were able to participate in bathing the elephants, feeding them sugarcane, riding them and watching them paint a picture. It was fabulous! You can also enjoy a serene bamboo raft ride down the river and have a delicious lunch as part of your day there.

The Four Seasons Chiang Mai

The Four Seasons resort is located about 30 minutes outside of town, in a spectacular hillside setting. It offers a variety of room and residences ranging from one to four-bedroom villas. The newer pool villas were my favorite: open floor plan, one bedroom with contemporary decor. All of these rooms have a beautiful private pool and garden. Great for celebrating a special occasion!

The Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi

This is a self-contained resort in Chiang Mai, spreading over 60 acres. It opened in 2004 and the architecture encompasses many styles of the historic Lanna kingdom of northern Thailand. The property is composed of suites and villas, set about the resort amidst tropical foilage and greenery. They have one of the best destination spas, offering a variety of Ayurvedic treatments and wellness programs. I loved my Colonial suite during my stay here. This entry level room was over 900 square feet, had a separate living area, and a huge bathroom! These rooms are beside the main pool, and they all have terraces or patios for easy access. The morning breakfast buffet did not disappoint. There were stations for Asian food, Western food, and juicers for making fresh fruit juice to order. It is a great way to start the day!

A great hotel located right next to where the Night Market takes place is Le Meridien Chiang Mai. This new high rise hotel has very comfortable rooms and suites. It is a perfect location for the shoppers in the family. The junior suites are spacious and have all of the amenities you would expect from a 5 star hotel, and a deep-soaking tub with a view!

Exploring Laos

Luxury travel experts have predicted that Laos and Thailand will be among the top must-see destinations for 2012. Lucky for our readers, we have just come back from this fabulous part of the world and are happy to report our findings!


Mekong River

Laos is a mountainous, landlocked country, sharing borders with Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, China and Myanmar. It has the unfortunate distinction of being the most bombed country in the world per capita. None of this is evident when visiting the historic city of Luang Prabang. Luang Prabang is the former Royal capital of Laos and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is set on the banks of the Mekong river, surrounded by green mountains, and filled with temples and monasteries. The town has quaint hotels and restaurants, combining traditional Lao with European colonial architecture. The French did leave their imprint on the city, with many restaurants specializing in French cuisine and bakeries serving up delicious, crusty french bread and pastries.

I traveled here with my colleague and uncle, Steven Kalt, VP of Bee Kalt Travel. We flew to Luang Prabang direct from Bangkok, and spent our time exploring the city and surrounding area. There are many sights to keep one busy and three nights would be our recommended length of stay. We took a stroll through the morning market, with its stalls teeming with fresh vegetables, fish, and assorted local delicacies. We visited several Buddhist temples and were awed by the intricate mosaics made with colored glass. A cruise up the Mekong river in our own private long-tailed boat was a special treat. We visited the Pak Ou caves, filled with thousands of buddha statues, mostly left by locals over the years. A visit to the Kuang Si waterfalls gave us the opportunity to see more of the countryside and sadly, the poverty of the local village life.

One of the highlights of our visit to Luang Prabang was the merit-making ceremony of giving alms to the local monks. Each morning the saffron-robed monks walk through the city at dawn and accept food and offerings from the kneeling villagers. Our tour guide provided us with sticky rice prepared by his wife, so that we could participate in this moving and solemn event.

Where to stay in Luang Prabang? We stayed at La Residence Phou Vao, an Orient-Express hotel. It has a spectacular setting on a hillside, with serene gardens and a view of the golden stupa atop Mount Phou Si. My junior suite had beautiful, dark hardwood floors and cabinetry, a lovely stone bath/shower area and an outdoor sitting area with upholstered lounge chairs. The complimentary wifi came in handy to stay connected with home and office. The restaurant served a variety of Lao and Western cuisine, all prepared to perfection. The breakfast buffet was seemingly endless: you could start with a lao noodle or rice soup, or have your morning omelette. It was hard to pass up the assortment of breads and croissants. OK, I didn't. I also didn't pass up the fresh, hot, made-to-order crepes each morning! I figured I walked the 350 steps up to the top of Phou Si hill, I could have the nutella and banana crepe.

La Residence Phou Vao has the beautiful Mekong spa, with individual treatment rooms surrounding a lotus pond. I wanted to try something new and typical to the region so I booked the Mo Hom herbal massage. It was a relaxing and healing treatment, where an herbal compress was used to massage warm oils into my skin. Perfect for jet lag!

This was a wonderful adventure, perfect to combine with a visit to the neighboring countries. We chose to follow our Laos visit with a whirlwind tour of Thailand - details coming up next!

It's Better in the Bahamas!

This old slogan still rings true, especially if you are staying at the Atlantis Resort! I recently stayed at The Reef, the newest all-suite tower in the Atlantis Resort complex. The accommodations range from a studio to a one or two-bedroom suite. All suites have kitchenettes or fully-equipped kitchens. This makes it nice when traveling with the family, and the spacious rooms ensure that both the parents and kids will each have their own space. The suites are beautifully decorated and all have full balconies.

I also visited The Cove at the Atlantis. This place makes for a fabulous adult-only getaway, although you are welcome to bring the kids. There are a variety of suites in this building and they all have gorgeous marble baths. The Cove also has a Club Lounge for the Concierge level suites, serving complimentary food and beverage presentations throughout the day. The Cove has a family pool, which it shares with The Reef, in addition to the adult-only Cain at the Cove pool. This exclusive area has the feel of an outdoor nightclub, complete with day beds, a deejay, and gaming tables where you can play blackjack poolside!

My Kind of Town

I remember my first trip to New York City in the 1980's: Times Square was a seedy place filled with adult peep shows and ladies of the evening. Fast forward to 2011 and Times Square is completely different: bright, clean and buzzing with tourists from all over the world.

Travelers used to want to stay near Central Park and the 5th Avenue shops. The venerable Plaza hotel is still there, a commanding presence on the corner of 5th Avenue and Central Park South. It has reopened after a complete closure and renovation. The rooms and lobby have retained their traditional feel. The glass domed Palm Court is the premier place for an elegant afternoon tea. Be sure to make your reservations well in advance as they are usually completely booked on the weekends.

These days, there are wonderful hotels all over the city and it feels safe to walk just about anywhere. There are great neighborhoods to explore with fabulous restaurants and one-of-a-kind boutiques.

I enjoyed visiting the Trump hotel in Soho. This newer addition to the Trump hotel collection is within walking distance to all of the fun shops in and around Spring and Prince streets. The rooms and suites are very airy with a contemporary but comfortable feel. The views of the city are fantastic from the higher floor rooms. There is a beautiful spa, with the only luxury private hammam (a Turkish bath) in the city. The Trump Soho also has one of the few outdoor pools in New York - a relaxing oasis in the city.

I stayed at the new Chatwal hotel, located just off of Times Square in the Theater District. It is a great place to stay if you like to be close to the action. The hotel is in a landmark building which used to be home to the famous Lambs Club. The decor is art deco but with a modern twist. The staff uniforms evoke New York in the 1930's - the cocktail lounge makes you feel like you've stepped back in time!
This is a boutique hotel, with only 76 rooms and suites. The rooms are done in soothing beige and cream tones, with sueded walls and very cool closets that resemble old steamer trunks. Modern technology takes over in the room, with a button to control everything, from the drapes to the lighting. It continues into the black and chrome bathroom, where a TV is embedded in the mirror. Even the Toto toilet is the ultimate in modern conveniences, with sprays, blowers and a heated seat!

They named the restaurant The Lambs Club in a nod to the building's previous incarnation. The red upholstered booths and huge fireplace give it a very clubby feel. On my visit, the food and service were fantastic. The location makes it a great place to go before or after the theater.

The Book of Mormon, which won nine Tony awards this year, including Best Musical. Can't get tickets? Never fear, the ever efficient head concierge at The Chatwal may be able to snag some for you. I found the show to be very funny and entertaining. If you are easily offended by foul language and sexual references, this may not be the show for you.

New York City has so much to offer: museums, parks, fine dining, history and shopping. It's a great destination for a perfect weekend getaway!

I've just returned from another fabulous stay at Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Arizona. What to do when the nest is empty?

I am pondering this question as I spend my first Sunday night alone, after dropping off my youngest child at college. So far, my list includes cleaning the closets, making books from my numerous photos from recent (and not so recent) trips, and attacking the stack of unread travel magazines. I think the most logical answer for me, a travel advisor, is: to travel!

Last week I attended Virtuoso's annual Travel Mart, where I met with our hotel and tour partners from around the world. These are the movers and shakers of the travel industry, and I came home with plenty of ideas of where to travel to next!

Since my elder daughter will be studying in Spain next year, I may want to pop over for a visit. In Madrid there are some beautiful choices of hotels, perhaps the iconic Hotel Ritz Madrid. It is perfectly situated next to Retiro park and within walking distance to the museums. All of the rooms and suites are individually decorated in a classic style.

If I am in the mood for something a little more contemporary, the Hotel Villa Magna would be perfect. A recent renovation has left it more elegant than ever. I don't think I can go wrong with any of the six Virtuoso properties that are located in Madrid.

I will definitely have to fly or train down to the coast and visit the Marbella Club Hotel. It is open year-round so I don't have to worry about when to travel. They have a heated salt water pool, fabulous European spa and their own 18-hole golf course.

Maroma Resort and Spa, Mayan Riviera, Mexico

White sand beach, turquoise ocean and an icy cold margarita greeted me upon arrival at the Maroma Resort. This exclusive retreat is located just 30 minutes south of the Cancun International airport, an easy flight from most major North American cities.

Maroma, an Orient-Express hotel, sits on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, surrounded by lush, jungle plants and flowers. It has everything you would need or want for a romantic getaway: cozy rooms with Mexican tiled baths, or expansive suites complete with your own private plunge pool on the terrace, private rooftop massage bed and a personal gym. The accommodations come with every amenity: wifi, ipod docking stations, wonderful organic soaps and body lotions. The only thing missing, and I didn't miss it, is a television. They do have a lounge with a large screen TV available for guest use if needed.
There is an emphasis on tranquility and relaxation here. You are given the option to choose an aromatherapy scent for your room if you wish, and each night when you return, the room is bathed in candlelight.

Days can be spent on the water, snorkeling, jet-skiing, sailing or lounging on Maroma's fantastic beach beds. They have plenty of beach umbrellas for those who prefer to stay in the shade. There is a nice, air-conditioned, well-equipped fitness center along with a open air yoga pavilion. The spa is a destination in itself. The massage suites are centered around a serene courtyard. They offer a variety of treatments including many Mayan influenced body treatments. One of the more unusual experiences offered here at Maroma is the Mayan Temezcal. It is a ritual steam bath which is meant to purify and calm the body and spirit. Those who are claustrophobic need not apply. But, for the adventurous, this is quite an experience! It begins with the ancient tradition of burning incense and blowing a conch shell, then the Temazcalera ushers the guests into the Temazcal, a small pyramid shaped room with a fire pit in the center. Hot lava rocks are deposited in the center of the pit, the doors are closed, and the rocks are doused with herb infused water. This creates an aromatic steam along with a lot of heat. There is chanting and meditating while the steam purifies and heals the body.
You come out refreshed and invigorated when it's all over! I highly recommend this experience.

The resort offers several dining options, with fabulous cuisine. I had my fill of fresh-made guacamole and ceviche, along with artfully presented seafood dishes and decadent desserts.

Tanzania, Arusha to Zanzibar - Part Two

Zanzibar, known as the Spice Island, is a wonderful place to wind down post-safari, or after climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. Zanzibar is actually an archipelago of many islands, but we spent time on the main island at the laid-back beach resort called Breezes (not related to the Breezes resorts in the Caribbean).

A short flight from Kilimanjaro airport took our small group to Stone Town. A one hour drive across the island followed. The island is quite beautiful, with its many mango, jack fruit and other types of tropical trees. The most widely practiced religion here is Islam, and most of the women wear traditional modest clothing, keeping their heads covered. You get a sense of being somewhere very exotic.

Breezes is set on one of the nicest beaches on the island. The Indian Ocean had the most vivid colors of blue, turquoise and green. When the tide goes out, you can walk out into the ocean quite far, to the edge of the coral reef, with the water never getting above your knees. It was very interesting to watch the tide come in and out each day.

The resort has many watersports activities, with snorkeling and diving at the top of the list. Kite surfing lessons are also offered for those who are so inclined. I enjoyed using the gym (small but adequate), taking a yoga class, and indulging in a Thai massage at the full-service spa.

This is a wonderful place for honeymooners, and there were many there! They have a very romantic table for two, near the beach, that can be reserved for a special evening.

A tour of the city of Stone Town is a must while you are there. The history of the island is quite fascinating, having been conquered by many different Empires through the ages: Portuguese, Sultanate of Oman, British and German. There is a variety of architecture to be seen in the narrow streets and the elaborately carved wooden doors. Walking through the public market was quite a cultural experience.

Tanzania, from Arusha to Zanzibar - Part One

Tanzania is a land of contrasts: the lush, green foliage of the mountains gives way to the dry, arid plains of the Serengeti. You can see the Masai people in their traditional dress, living in mud and stick huts, and there are large urban areas with population in the millions. This East African nation made for a perfect first-time safari for an exclusive group of Bee Kalt Travel adventurers.

Our journey began with a night in Arusha at the Arusha Coffee Lodge. They have lovely accommodations in individual cottages. Our stay here was all too brief as we left early in the morning to catch our charter flight to the Serengeti. A short flight brought us to the Kogatende airstrip where our drivers were waiting to meet us. They would be our guides for the next 8 days and nights.

Our first stop was a semi-permanent tented camp called Lemala Serengeti Camp. The canvas tents had wooden plank floors and en-suite baths. Well, showers. Bush showers to be exact. The tent "butler" would fill up the bag with hot water when you were ready to take a shower. They had flush toilets too, which is my minimum requirement for camping. I admit, I'm much more of a glamper than a camper. Our afternoon game drive was exciting, and we spent a bit of time watching a pod of hippos playing and fighting in the river.
In the evening, we sat around the campfire with pre-dinner drinks, enjoyed a wonderful meal and retired early, listening to the sounds of the bush at night.

The next morning, we packed up and left in pursuit of the Great Migration. This is one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in the world. Millions of wildebeest and zebra follow the rains and grasses moving in a circular pattern from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya. The herds were a bit ahead of schedule this year, but we managed to catch them in the Northern Serengeti. It was a spectacle indeed! We sat in our vehicle in the midst of the animals, listening to the cacophony of mooing and braying. We stayed for a while, and then drove on to our next camp, in the central Serengeti.

Serengeti is the Masai word for endless plain. The plains are so vast, they seem to stretch on forever. We arrived in the late afternoon at our next stop, a luxury tented camp called Mbuzi Mawe. Things were looking up: fixed canvas tents with four poster beds, running water and real showers. We had to be careful to zip up our tents and keep things put away because a naughty baboon has learned to unzip the doorway and help himself to whatever he can find inside. Apparently he has a fondness for Colgate toothpaste, and he ate one person's snacks and immodium! From this location, we enjoyed a fantastic experience of hot-air ballooning, taking off in the light of the early morning sunrise. We floated above the trees, passing over lions, gazelles, hippos and more.

Our journey continued with a visit to the Ngorongoro Crater. The crater is the largest intact caldera in the world. It has one of the largest concentrations of animals in all of Africa. We spent a thrilling day on a game drive in the crater, spotting lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, flamingos, pelicans, and of course, wildebeest and zebras. Our home here was the Serena Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, perched on the Crater's edge with fantastic views of the crater below.

After all of this driving and game-viewing, we took a day off and landed at a very luxurious retreat called The Manor. It has just 20 rooms in Cape Dutch style cottages, located in the highlands with beautiful views of the coffee plantation and surrounding hills. Here we relaxed, and took advantage of some of their offerings: spa treatments, horseback riding, walking or biking through the coffee plantation. Dinner was very elegant, in a cozy dining room with upholstered chairs and cloth covered tables. Not what you would normally picture when on safari!

Enough of taking it easy, time to move on to our last safari stop: Tarangire National Park. This park is known for its elephants and baobab trees. The baobab is a huge tree that looks almost prehistoric, and many are hundreds if not thousands of years old. The gnarley branches reach out in all directions toward the sky. We were greeted with a glass of baobab fruit juice at our next lodge.

We stayed at Tarangire Treetops, a fabulous lodge with tents built on platforms among the ancient trees. You can see the star-studded night sky through the mesh walls of the tent. The lodge has a swimming pool for the guests and a watering hole for the resident game. Here, we enjoyed a dinner in the boma, an outdoor fenced in dining area, where we sampled a variety of local dishes and a selection of grilled meats. They also had a performance of Masai dancers and invited some of us to join in!

Our last evening together was concluded with a special "Sundowner" atop Sunset hill. A toast to a splendid safari while watching a perfect African sunset.

Good to know: U.S. Citizens require a valid passport and a visa to enter Tanzania. A visa can be easily purchased upon arrival at Kilimanjaro airport for $100.00.

Safari in South Africa

No visit to South Africa would be complete without a safari. Renee and I continued our journey to the Sabi Sand Game Reserve near Kruger National Park. A two hour flight from Cape Town brought us within driving distance to our next stop, Singita Boulders.

If you have an aversion to high thread-count sheets, gourmet dining and fine wine, keep driving. We, on the other hand, enjoyed every bit of luxury that Singita dished up! Beautiful suites with walls of natural stone and glass have views looking out onto the grasslands and passing wildlife. After settling into our suite, we grabbed a quick snack and were ready to go out on our first game drive. We were introduced to our Ranger, Brett, and Tracker, Solomon, who expertly guided us through the bush.

During our stay at Singita, we saw four of the Big Five: Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant along with Zebra, Impala, Wildebeest, Giraffe and too many other to mention. Renee and I toasted our successful game drive with a traditional sundowner - a cocktail hour in the bush! I've written more about Singita in a previous post from May 2010, and I still feel that this is one of the most luxurious safari experiences out there. The Singita Ebony Lodge has just completed a renovation, refreshed, but still maintaining the colonial feel and decor.

After our two night stay at Singita Boulders, we moved on to check out neighboring Leopard Hills Lodge. Singita is a hard act to follow, but Leopard Hills did a fine job of keeping up. This small lodge has eight suites, built into the hillside, each with its own private deck and plunge pool. We particularly enjoyed the "Boma" dinner that night - an outdoor dinner served under the night sky - lovely.

Our driver guide at Leopard Hills was Dangerous Dave. We thought perhaps it was a misnomer because with his red hair and wide smile, Dave didn't look all that dangerous. We soon learned how he got his name as we tracked a pack of endangered African Wild Dogs to their den site. We sped along in our open-air 4 wheel drive vehicle, on the road, then off the road, bumping over the rocky terrain and through the thick brush. We found our dogs though, and we could hear the yelping of newly born pups in the den.

The next morning, Dave was determined to find the Buffalo for us, so we would be able to complete our Big Five game-viewing for this trip. We drove and drove with the crisp morning air whipping our faces - did I mention that morning game drives start at 6:00am? I was about ready to give up, when we suddenly came upon them: a whole herd of hundreds of buffalo! What an exciting way to finish our safari!

Cape Winelands

In less than an hour's drive from Cape Town, you will find the Cape Winelands. This is the largest wine producing region in South Africa. It is stunningly beautiful, with sprawling mountains dotted with vineyards and fields of lavender. There are over 400 wine farms in the region, most offering tastings. This is a dream destination for foodies and wine aficionados.

Renee and I spent two days here, enjoying all the region has to offer. Our chosen lodging was the charming and luxurious Le Quartier Francais. This boutique property has just 21 rooms and is conveniently located in the center of the town of Franschhoek. The rooms are individually decorated and make for the perfect romantic getaway. Le Quartier is also home to the award-winning restaurant, The Tasting Room, repeatedly on the list of the Top 50 restaurants in the world. In my opinion, it should not be considered a restaurant as much as an experience in gastronomy.

We spent one day visiting various wine farms, tasting the local wines (the pinotage was a favorite!), olive oil and chocolate. There are many gourmet eateries to choose from along the way, where you can stop and have lunch in between tastings. It was a relaxing way to spend the day and tour the area. We enjoyed passing through the quaint University town of Stellenbosch.

Our next day started with a cooking class, arranged by Le Quartier Francais. We had so much fun learning how to prepare some typical South African dishes. We tried not to eat too much today because we had reservations at The Tasting Room that night! It was hard to do, and we had to resist when we visited the Moreson wine farm, with it's renowned Bread and Wine restaurant. Home baked breads, selections of soups, salads and house made charcuterie make for another adventure in dining.

Finally, it was time for our much anticipated dinner. The decor of The Tasting Room is understated, with the emphasis on the cuisine. We perused the menu, deciding between the five course choice menu, or the nine course "surprise" menu. The idea of the surprise menu is to have diners experience things that perhaps they may not usually order. We opted for the surprise menu and got our tastebuds ready! We also went with the wine pairing, which gave us a different taste of wine with each course. The meal was heavenly and we enjoyed course after course, each artfully and dramatically presented. Each wine was poured and served with an explanation or description. Both Renee and I agreed it was one of the best meals we have ever had.

Cairo
The sights, the sounds, the smells. This city of 1,000 minarets is also known affectionately as the city of "beep beep". I've never visited a city with traffic quite like this. The drivers make their own lanes as they weave in and out, between other cars and pedestrians. If there was a sound to the city, this one would have to be beep beep!

Once you look past the pollution and grit of the city there is much beauty to be found. Sailing on a felucca, a single-masted wooden boat, is a charming way to enjoy an afternoon on the Nile river. When the sun goes down Cairo looks beautiful with the colorful lights of the city reflecting off the water. There is much to see and do in Cairo and the surrounding areas. Of course, a visit to the famous Pyramids of Giza is a must. While there, take a camel ride! About an hour drive from Cairo will take you to the ancient cities of Memphis and Sakkara, where you can view the oldest, step pyramid. It is fascinating to see these structures in person and realize that these huge wonders were all built by hand. Take time to visit the Egyptian museum where the Treasures of King Tut are on display. A new state-of-the art museum is under construction and is slated to open in 2012.

There are so many Temples and Tombs to visit all throughout the country. My trip with my family was arranged with our local partner, Egyptian Express. They helped craft a perfect itinerary, which allowed us to see as much as we could in the time we had. We flew to the city of Aswan in Upper Egypt, our starting point for a cruise on the River Nile. I was surprised to find that this city has a population of close to one million people. We enjoyed the Nubian museum and the shopping in the Spice Market. We also had a chance to fly down to Abu Simbel and visit the great Temple of Ramses II.

Our Nile cruise ship was the Amarco II, one of the most luxurious ships on the river. The rooms and baths are very spacious, and free internet was a plus. This is a relaxing and interesting way to explore the area. You can visit a few sights each day while the ship moves slowly northward to Luxor. Once at Luxor, we visited the famous Temples of Karnak. This is the best preserved complex in all of Egypt. We also visited the Valley of the Kings, and actually went down into the tomb of King Tut where all of his treasures were discovered. His mummy lies on display there. During the trip, we were escorted by our Egyptologist guide, Ossama. He took care of every travel detail in addition to sharing as much information and history we could handle. This was a wonderful way to explore Egypt!

Tip: Entry requirements for U.S. citizens are a valid passport and a visa. The visa is easily purchased upon arrival at the Cairo airport for $15.00.
Best time weather-wise to travel is September - April, when it isn't unbearably hot. Do bring a sun hat whenever you go, because there is not much shade when visiting the monuments.

Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is a fabulous city that some people compare to San Francisco. It has an exciting waterfront, temperate climate and the imposing backdrop of Table Mountain. There is so much to see and do, you could easily spend a week or more here. We recommend at least three or four nights in order to get the most out of your visit. A visit to Cape Town can be easily combined with a safari, either before or after your city stay. Where to stay? There are several luxurious hotels we recommend.

Londolozi, South Africa

My journey continued with a charter flight out to "the bush", where it is not advisable to reach out and pet the kitties. Federal Air provides flights from its own private terminal at the Johannesburg airport. It's a pleasure to check in with their friendly staff, and wait in the comfortable lounge or the outdoor garden patio before flight time. They have a nice selection of complimentary snacks and a lovely gift shop to help pass the time.

I landed at the Londolozi airstrip in less than an hour, where I was met by my Ranger and taken on a short drive to my home for the next two nights. Londolozi is a private game lodge situated in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, adjacent to Kruger National Park. Londolozi welcomes couples and families and is run efficiently and enthusiastically by the Varty family, who have owned the property since 1926.
There are five different camps to choose from, each with varying degrees of luxury and intimacy, depending on the individual needs and desires of the guest.

I stayed in Varty camp where my suite had an elegant, rustic feel to it. I loved the dark wood wrap-around deck with private plunge pool. I also liked how the entire length of the suite was fitted with glass or door walls. Even the huge indoor shower had a wall of glass, looking out onto the wilderness. It brings the outdoors indoors - but you are cautioned to keep your doors latched or a curious baboon might find his way in!

Johannesburg, South Africa

I traveled to South Africa recently with the deluxe tour company, Swain Tours. They planned a seamless trip, with timely meet and greet services upon arrival and pleasant, knowledgeable guides throughout. My itinerary included Johannesburg, a safari and Cape Town. I stayed at my favorite hotel in Jo'burg, The Westcliff. Beautiful accommodations, excellent service and delicious food are hallmarks of this resort-like hotel in the city.

I enjoyed a new tour offered called "Walking with the Lions". I must admit to being skeptical when first hearing of the tour. I do not support activities that exploit animals, or animal interactions that exist solely for the purpose of entertaining tourists. This was not the case at Cullinan. The farm we visited, run by Colin McCrae and his family, is working toward the conservation and re-population of the African lion. I was surprised to hear of the dramatic decline in numbers of lions, from a quarter million to only 20,000 left in the wild. Through his program, visitors are allowed unprecedented access to these beautiful creatures. The goal of his breeding program is to have a genetically diverse group of cats, and to create conditions where the lions' instincts will take over so they will be able to be released into the wild. You are only allowed to walk with lions under one year of age. I felt very safe, with many handlers accompanying us on the walk. My favorite part of the day was when we were able to hold and feed 3 week old baby lions! They were so cuddly and cute - it was an amazing experience!

Cruise News You Can Use!

There are several new ships debuting in the next few months, which will add more entertainment options and activities to the high seas. We've already seen the entrance of Celebrity's new Eclipse. Her sister, the Silhouette, will join the line next July. Oceania's new 1,200 passenger Marina will begin sailing in January, and has already been selling out! Royal Caribbean is proud to debut the Allure of the Seas next month. The Allure is the sister ship to the Oasis of the Seas, which you can read about in a previous post. It is the largest passenger ship afloat, with an almost 6,000 passenger capacity, and more activities, shows and restaurants than any other vessel. We will be visiting the Allure and the new Seabourn Sojourn in November and we will report back with our impressions!
What does all this mean to the average cruiser? There are great deals to be had on the older ships! And these days, with all of the new builds, old can mean last year's model. We have seen some amazing pricing lately: $600.00 per person for a week in a balcony stateroom on a premium cruise ship! Canyon Ranch - much more than a spa!

I've just returned from Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Arizona. This was my 10th visit in as many years and it maintains its status as a top spa resort in my book! The word 'spa' does not begin to describe it. It is a "health resort" where you can try all types of fitness classes, hike in the morning, bike in the afternoon, meditate, have a full medical evaluation by some of the country's best doctors, and finish the evening with the most delicious piece of warm chocolate cake with creme anglaise. Oh yes, I will not forget to mention the spa treatments! All types of massages, facials and body treatments are available. I love the basic Canyon Ranch body massage, but if you want something really special, try the Canyon Stone massage or the Thai massage. It's a pleasurable way to while away 100 minutes!

A typical day might be an early morning walk, followed by a nutritious (and delicious!) breakfast, cardio class, stretch class, strength class, lunch, maybe a lecture on Astrology or Orthotics, relax by the pool or do more classes. The ever-helpful Program Advisors assist each individual guest in planning his or her stay and they will make suggestions of how to get the most out of the Ranch, depending on what the guest is looking for. Different people will take away different things from their experiences, whether it's a physical change, spiritual change or just pure relaxation that they came for.

I always try something new each time I visit, either a new class, fitness challenge or spa treatment. This year I went to the Desert Drumming class. The best way to describe it is a room full of gals beating on large fit balls with wooden drumsticks. It was fun, and somewhat amusing as we followed the instructor's choreography of beating our own, and our neighbors' balls, to the music. Last year I tried the Goat Butter body treatment. It was a wonderful way to end an active day: being slathered in a rich goat butter from head to toe, wrapped in warm towels, and lowered into a water-bed to relax for 30 minutes. It was a great floating sensation, and my skin had never been so soft afterward!

Phinda Game Reserve - KwaZulu Natal, South Africa

This 56,800 acre private game reserve is managed by andBeyond, formerly known as CCAfrica. This company runs luxury safari camps and lodges all over East and Southern Africa. Phinda is an hour and 45 minute flight from Johannesburg. It can also be accessed by road from Durban, or the smaller Richard's Bay airport or seaport.

There are four lodges and two private use homes located on the Phinda reserve. Each has its own personality to appeal to different people and tastes. Vlei lodge is perfect for couples or honeymooners. Only six individual romantic suites comprise this property, each with its own private plunge pool and views of the open grasslands. You can watch the Nyala and Kudu grazing in the fields from the privacy and comfort of your own verandah.

I loved my chalet at the Forest lodge. At first glance, these rooms reminded me of the cabins I stay in at a family camp in Northern Michigan. All similarities stopped as soon as I climbed the steps to the porch, complete with lovely outdoor seating area. Sliding glass doors lead to a newly renovated suite, in calming colors of cream and beige. Comfy sofas, fluffy comforters, terracotta-colored tiled baths with free standing tub and separate shower all made for a wonderfully luxurious haven to retire to. The room was equipped with everything you could possibly need in, or out of, the bush: I-pod docking station, plugs to charge your batteries and cell phone (if you're so inclined), air conditioning, safe, fully-stocked minibar (included), robes and slippers.

The location of Forest lodge, in a tree-filled sand forest, was a very different environment than that of the Mountain lodge. The family-friendly Mountain lodge is perched high atop a hill with sweeping views of the entire reserve. The beautifully renovated rooms and suites are scattered throughout the property, connected by stone pathways that meander between waterfalls and lush vegetation. Each suite has a private plunge pool, outdoor shower, spacious living areas and ensuite baths. I was impressed by the included bath amenities: in addition to the usual soaps and shampoos, Phinda also provides a wonderful body scrub (perfect after a dusty game drive!) and citronella oil. Luckily, I didn't need the latter item because I never saw a mosquito! The main lodge is centered around a peaceful courtyard and houses the dining room, bar, gift shop and internet lounge.

My favorite choice for families or a group of friends traveling together would be to stay at the Homestead. This stylish, private safari villa has a dedicated team of staff, including a private ranger, tracker, butler and chef. All this to cater just to you and your guests! This is the perfect place for someone looking for very personal service in an intimate atmosphere.

Tip: During the South African Winter months of May - August, it can get very cold in the early morning and evening, especially when driving in an open-air vehicle. We recommend dressing in layers, and include a warm hat, scarf and gloves in your packing list! In the afternoon, when the sun is high in the sky, it's warm enough to swim, so toss in that bathing suit too!

Singita Sabi Sand

My African adventure continues! I left the eco-lodges behind to head for the bush in South Africa, specifically, to the ultimate in safari lodges, Singita. The Singita name is synonymous with unsurpassed luxury. Wine cellars, gourmet five-course tasting menus, fitness center and spa, expansive suites with private plunge pools. If you can tear yourself away from your suite, they offer fabulous game drives each day.

If you prefer a little pampering while on safari, Singita is the perfect choice. I flew to the Sabi Sand game reserve on a Federal Air charter direct to the Singita airstrip. I left Johannesburg, and in less than an hour, I was greeted by the charming Marc, my guide for the next two days. Upon arrival at Singita Ebony, I was welcomed with a cold towel and drink, and taken to my suite. The decor is Colonial in style with dark woods and rich-colored fabrics. I had a cozy sitting area with fireplace, gorgeous four poster bed, indoor/outdoor showers, deep-soaking tub, dressing area and a huge deck with my own private pool. The room had a wall of windows facing the grasslands, through which I could watch the passing wildlife.

No time to relax before the afternoon game drive! A lovely tea is set out prior to the drive, this one included mini hamburgers and bite-size stuffed potatoes. Off to the bush with Marc expertly driving, and Mishack, tracking from his perch on the front of the safari vehicle. I had a fantastic game-viewing experience while at Singita. I saw the Big 5: Leopard, Lion, Buffalo, Elephant and Rhino, in addition to giraffe, warthogs, zebra, impala and more. I learn something new every time. On this particular game drive, I learned that a group of rhino is called a "crash" of rhino. Do you know what a group of giraffe is called? (see answer below)

Sundowners are a tradition while on safari in Africa. You take a break from your drive, usually as the sun is going down, and enjoy a cool drink. Again, Singita proves to take these moments very seriously. No beer and pretzels here, I was served a selection of pates and dips to go along with my favorite safari drink, the classic Gin and Tonic.

More surprises awaited, as we drove up to a candlelit dinner set up under the stars for all of the guests at the lodge. A decadent five-course meal with wine pairings was the perfect finish to this perfect day!

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest - Uganda

Continuing the saga of our 8-night safari in Rwanda and Uganda, here is the last installment.
We had one more gorilla trek in Rwanda before heading across the border to Uganda. This final trek in Rwanda was to visit the 17 member Kwitando family. We departed in a downpour, but by the time we reached our family, the skies had cleared, giving us some good photo opportunities.

Here, we watched family groups playing together and grooming each other. It was so much fun watching a baby rolling around and doing somersaults!

Our last trek, in the Bwindi National Park in Uganda, was the one I had been most nervous about. This area has the reputation of being the most difficult trekking because of thick vegetation and steep terrain. After our first hike (see Day One gorilla-trekking), this was a piece of cake. We did travel uphill, at a steep incline, for about 40 minutes before reaching the Rushegura family. We followed their trail of banana peels to their resting spot. This one was our best viewing yet! We observed a huge Silverback, many mothers and several babies eating and playing. It is fascinating to be able to be so close and just watch them in their natural habitat. Our one hour allotted time flew by, and it was time to leave them.

We spent some time shopping in the small village next to the park. You can pick up local handicrafts, basketry, and T-shirts with the saying: Mzungus in the Mist. I found this one particularly funny, mzungu being the term for white person!

We drove to Bwindi, a six hour drive from Kigali. The border formalities did not take long. U.S. citizens must purchase a visa upon arrival in Uganda, current price is $50.00 per person. No visa is required for entry into Rwanda. Uganda offers spectacular scenery, hiking, treks to the endangered Golden Monkeys, big game safaris and more!

Day 2 - Gorilla Trekking

We started out a little stiff from the activities of the day before, but excitement was building as we KNEW we would see the gorillas today! The Warden assured us we would have an easy group to reach.

We were assigned Group 13, so named for being the 13th habituated gorilla family in the park. Our driver dropped us at the starting point. We had to cross an extremely muddy and wet field. The kind of mud that threatens to pull your boot right off your foot when you sink into it! We scampered over the rock wall into the edge of the forest. We only walked about 15 minutes when, in the distance, I saw a large gorilla swinging from a vine - just like in the movie Tarzan!

Our guide gave us our instructions: leave your belongings with the porters, only carry your camera, no flash photography, talk softly, and do not point (which is really hard NOT to do!). He informed us that he would make sounds that basically told the animals "we come in peace".

We followed our guide, Olivier, who showed us the Silverback, the largest, oldest male leader of the family. We actually got to see two Silverbacks that day. The second one had come over to try and woo away a female and perhaps start his own family. There was a lot of chest-beating and grunting going on between the two. I actually got a fright when the biggest guy stood up and barreled right toward us. He ended up walking past without a second glance. I think my heart stopped beating for that split second. I quickly regained my composure to follow him to a clearing, where he easily pulled down small trees, stripped the branches of their leaves, and stuffed them into his mouth. We also got to observe mothers, babies and juveniles during our all too brief visit. The one hour allotted time went by very quickly.

It was a very special experience and one that will stay with us for a long time. Gorilla-trekking allows proximity to the animals that you don't normally get on a regular safari. Most people who are fit and able to walk over uneven surfaces can do it.

Day One - Gorilla trekking

Did I say this was my dream trip? I was wondering "what could I have been thinking?", as our ranger machete'd his way through the thick forest, creating what was supposed to be a trail. We dutifully followed, stepping over logs, ducking under branches, and trying not to let our ankles get caught up in the twisted vines on the forest floor. It was the adventure of a lifetime!

Our group that day was composed of 7 people, ranging in age from 28 to 76. We were a tough bunch, determined to see our gorilla family, the Hirwa group. This gorilla family lives in the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. The park is reached by a 2 1/2 to 3 hour drive from the capital city of Kigali. We traveled with the top-notch tour operator, Volcanoes Safaris. They will plan out your itinerary, lodging, and secure the gorilla permits for you. You must buy the permits ahead of time as they are very limited. Each day, you show up at the National Park office, you are divided into groups (maximum 8), and assigned a gorilla family for the day.

We had to drive about 15 minutes to get to our starting point. After a 30 minute walk through some farmland, we reached the edge of the forest. We had to scramble up a rock wall, cross a log bridge, and into the jungle we went! The scenery was incredible, as we climbed higher, reaching a bamboo forest. The trackers carefully follow the clues to find the gorillas, torn branches, scattered remains of the soft bamboo shoots that the gorillas love to eat.

Each of us had hired a porter, a necessity as far as I am concerned. They are local men who will carry your backpack, camera, and help you up the mountain if you need it. The current going rate for a porter is $10 for the day. My porter that day, Samway, was a life-saver. He held tight to my hand as I slipped in the mud, going uphill. He would position himself in front of me when going downhill to prevent me from sliding too far. Did I mention it was very muddy?

We hiked and we hiked. Uphill. Downhill. Across the face of a cliff, clinging to branches, and roots, and anything that would give us a handhold or foothold, silently praying that the rootball would not give way! Alas, our dreams were not to be realized that day. We were out for 10 hours, without ever catching up to our family. Disappointing? A little. Actually, I think most of us were just glad to have returned without serious injury. We were told by the Warden that this NEVER happens (not seeing the gorillas). We set a record! But, not to worry, there were more chances ahead.

We returned to the lovely Virunga Lodge that evening, wet, muddy, and very tired. The wonderful staff whisked our muddy boots away, to be returned to us the next day looking brand new again. I don't know how they clean them so well!
The lodge is set high on a mountain top, overlooking valleys, farms and two volcanic lakes. It is a spectacular setting. The eight rooms are very comfortable and rustic in decor. They have running water, flush toilets, and use solar power for energy (read: it's dark in the rooms, forget about makeup.)

The meals were always fresh and delicious. Meals, beverages, laundry and even massages are all included in the price of a stay.

Wild times in Africa

I am writing from Africa, having arrived on the continent yesterday. My purpose of this trip is two-fold, first to go gorilla-trekking in Rwanda and Uganda (my dream trip), and then to attend the largest African travel trade show in Durban, South Africa.

I flew from Washington DC, direct service to Johannesburg, South Africa. The lie-flat seats were very comfortable and made the 15 plus hour trip relatively painless. To be fair, I have also done the same flight in coach, a little more painful, but definitely worth the discomfort! I spent one night at the fabulous Westcliff hotel located about 30 minutes drive from the Jo'burg airport (we in the know call it Jo'burg!). The rooms are spacious with beautiful marble bathrooms. The staff is warm and welcoming. Dinner at the Polo Bar was just what I needed after a long flight - a tapas-style menu with many offerings of small plates. I enjoyed the shrimp fritters and beef stir-fry, along with, I think, the best mojito I have ever had!

Off to bed to get a good night sleep before I met up with Robin Binckes, award-winning tour guide on the history of South Africa. Robin picked me up at the Westcliff early in the morning to give me as much of a tour of Soweto as he could in our limited time together. He is an excellent teacher and story-teller, and I learned so much about the complicated history of this nation. I highly recommend a tour with Robin if you are at all interested in Apartheid or the history of South Africa.

I am now at the beautiful Fairmont Norfolk hotel in Nairobi. This historical property maintains its grandeur with a history of hosting kings and presidents. The rooms do not disappoint, but my stay is all too brief, as I head out in the morning for Rwanda to trek to the mountain gorillas. There are only about 750 mountain gorillas left in the wild. They live between Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Currently it is only safe for tourists to do these treks from Rwanda and Uganda. You must buy a permit to enter the National park as the government keeps very tight controls for the gorilla's protection. You are divided into groups of no more than 8, and assigned a gorilla family to trek to. Once you reach your family, you may only stay one hour to observe.

A Week In...London

If you've had enough of sun and sand, a big city can provide the perfect Spring Break location! I've just returned from London, England, having spent a week there with my teenage daughter. We arrived home, limping, from all of the walking. We wanted to see as much as we could in the time we had. This included visits to the National Gallery for the fine art masterpieces, the British Museum for the mummies, the Tate Modern for a little bit of everything in the contemporary art world ( a word of warning: heed the sign when it says "this room contains explicit material", especially when traveling with your teenager!) The wonderful thing about all of these museums is that they are free to visitors, although a donation is requested.

We took a day trip out to Windsor Castle and Oxford, expertly arranged by our Virtuoso on-site, Sincerely Paul. Paul provided us with a knowledgeable, friendly driver/guide who made the visits so much more enjoyable than if we were just reading out of a guidebook. We had fun visiting the Christ Church house at Oxford which served as the Hogwarts arrival hall in the Harry Potter films.

The sheer number of shows in the West End can leave you dizzy trying to decide what to see. We thoroughly enjoyed two musicals: Billy Elliott and Blood Brothers. One made you laugh and one made you cry, but both were very entertaining.

And I couldn't have visited this fair city without stopping in to see some of my favorite hoteliers. There are many luxury Virtuoso hotels in London, and they all have something different to offer. If you prefer small and homey, the Egerton House would be for you. Fancy and formal? Head to the Ritz. Can't live without a year-round swimming pool? The Berkeley would fit the bill. We stayed at the Stafford, perfectly located on a quiet street along the edge of Green Park. The rooms and suites are beautifully decorated with every modern convenience. The hotel is lucky to have Frank, the award-winning concierge, who knows all of the ins and outs of the city, and can get you into the hottest restaurants. We were so busy touring the city I barely had time to use the nicely-appointed fitness center.
I have to make special mention of The Goring hotel. They are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year. This family-owned hotel, located just behind Buckingham Palace, has the nicest staff around. The rooms are stately and grand, and it's the only one with its own private garden.

Miami - South Beach

The South Beach area of Miami, Florida provides the perfect weekend getaway for all types of travelers!

Are you the "see and be seen" type? Head to the Gansevoort Miami Beach. The largest private shark tank aquarium provides a backdrop to the colorful and stylish lobby, perfect for people-watching. The rooms and suites are large and decorated with the same modern theme. The party starts at the rooftop swimming pool and bar area, Plunge. There are plenty of sun chairs for hotel guests, and cabanas are available for those that don't want too much sun. Walking into the David Barton Gym, the fitness center of the hotel, I wasn't sure if I was in a nightclub or a workout facility. The lights are dim, but they have all of the state-of-the-art cardio machines and a great variety of classes with edgy names like "Pain and Pleasure" and "Fight Club". I opted for the more mundane Vinyasa Yoga, which was a perfect start to my day.

All suites have large soaking tubs, in addition to separate rainfall showers, in case you wish to have a spa treatment in the privacy of your room. Traveling with the kids? The Loews Miami Beach hotel is the perfect spot for you. This hotel recently completed a multi-million dollar renovation to the lobby and all guest rooms. It is looking very sharp and has some great venues for food and drink. There is an adorable new ice cream parlor off the lobby that serves the creamiest gelato and decadent desserts. The pool area is expansive and very family-friendly. The Loews has lots of activities available, from the kids club to the fitness center and spa. The staff is extremely friendly and welcoming throughout the resort.

Tip: Loved the international flavor of Lincoln Road. This is a great outdoor walking promenade filled with upscale shops and cafes. There are wonderful restaurants to choose from, many with outdoor dining areas. I enjoyed Sushi Samba, with its eclectic menu of sushi, Peruvian and Brazilian specialties - all of my favorites!

Machu Picchu

The Peruvian government announced that Machu Picchu will be closed until April of this year. This is a result of the recent torrential rains which brought mudslides to the area, damaging sections of the rail lines which provide the only access to and from the World Heritage Site. I feel for the locals, and my friends and partners in travel who are dependent on the tourism industry. Hopefully things should be up and running again by the time high season arrives this Spring!

Update! Machu Picchu will reopen to tourists on April 1, 2010.

I was fortunate enough to have visited Machu Picchu with my family exactly one year ago. We were all left in awe by the incredible beauty of Peru: the lush, green hills of the Sacred Valley, the colonial charm of the town of Cusco, and the incredible vastness of the Colca Canyon.

We stayed at the top hotels in the area: the Miraflores Park hotel in Lima, the Monasterio in Cusco and, my absolute favorite, Las Casitas del Colca, located in the Colca Canyon in the southern part of Peru. We also traveled on the ultra-luxurious Hiram-Bingham train from Cusco to Machu Picchu. I definitely recommend this as a special once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Peru has so much to offer and is one of the most biodiverse of any South American country. It is also becoming a capital of gastronomy. Lima is easily reached from most U.S. gateways with no jet-lag to contend with. Please contact me for any information on this fabulous destination!

Fun fact: Did you know the potato originated in Peru? There are over 4,000 varieties, many of them only found in Peru!

Tip: Cusco, Machu Picchu and the Colca Canyon are located high in the Andes mountains. To avoid altitude sickness, it is important to stay hydrated, don't exert yourself too much upon arrival, and drink the local Coca tea (it really helps, although the taste leaves something to be desired!)

Cruise update - Oasis of the Seas

Been there done that? Lots of seasoned cruisers feel that way about a Caribbean cruise. The islands haven't changed THAT much over the years and it can feel a little repetitive if you cruise every year. For some, ports have less importance, and the ship becomes the destination.
One such 'destination' ship is the brand-new Oasis of the Seas. This latest offering from Royal Caribbean Cruise Line debuted in November with many innovations never seen before on a cruise ship. The ship is divided into neighborhoods, such as Central Park, complete with leafy trees, and the Boardwalk has a real carousel. How about flying down a zip line past the pool deck?!

This is now the largest cruise ship afloat, carrying nearly 6,000 passengers each week. You'd be hard pressed to experience everything in one week aboard. There is so much to see and do between the entertainment, sports venues and fabulous restaurants.

Tip: You must pre-book activities and dining on this ship. You can pre-book your tickets to the shows, such as the popular Broadway hit Hairspray. Reserve a table for 2 for dinner at the cutting edge 150 Central Park, or my favorite, Chops Grille.

Credit Cards Revealed - Maximize your miles in 2010

There are so many credit card choices out there, it can be confusing to decide which one is best for you. If you are trying to earn miles or Elite Status on an airline, choosing the right credit card can help you get there without the jet lag!

I am going to concentrate on the Delta airlines Skymiles American Express cards since Delta is the major player if you fly in and out of the Detroit area.
First there is the basic Gold card. You will earn one mile for each dollar spent. Annual fee: $95

The next choice is the Platinum Skymiles card (not to be confused with the Amex Platinum card to be discussed later). With the Platinum Skymiles card, you have the opportunity to earn Medallion Qualification Miles. If you charge at least $25,000 in one year, you will earn the 25,000 miles BUT 10,000 of them will count toward MQM status. This is a great perk to get you to Silver, Gold or Platinum Medallion status with the airline. Annual fee: $150

Skymiles also has a Reserve Card with even more perks. This one allows you to earn up to 30,000 MQM's in one year, but you must spend at least $60,000. You also are allowed access to the Delta airport lounges when traveling on Delta, and you receive one free companion air ticket per year. Annual fee: $450

What do MQM's mean to you? Once you have Medallion elite status, you don't pay fees for checked luggage, you may receive complimentary upgrades, you can pre-reserve choice seats on the plane with no fee, and you get to board your flights first. If you fly a minimum of 25,000 miles in one calendar year, you will become a Silver Medallion. Gold and Platinum status may be obtained with higher mileage levels, and then you receive even more benefits!

The American Express Platinum Card has long been a provider of perks to luxury travelers. This card gives you access to several airport lounges when you are traveling on that carrier: American, Continental or Delta. When you cruise on certain cruise lines, you can receive up to $300 in shipboard credits. They have an air program where you can purchase 2-for-1 First class or Business class tickets on International flights. And you also earn Membership rewards, which can be used toward shopping, entertainment, hotel stays or transferred as miles to a variety of airlines. Annual fee: $450

One minor pitfall of using the American Express card exclusively is when you travel abroad. They tack on a 2.7% or higher fee to any purchases in a foreign currency. Many Visa cards charge a 3% additional fee for foreign purchases. The Capital One credit card is one that has no additional foreign exchange transaction fee, so you're not paying more for your purchases. Before you leave the country, you should check with your bank or credit card company and find out what fees may be associated with your card.

Tip: To get the most out of your money when traveling abroad, use local ATM machines to take out cash when needed. This is usually the most cost effective method while avoiding large fees or unfavorable exchange rates of the currency exchange booth!

Southern Africa

Africa... just the word conjures up all kinds of thoughts. Animals in the wild is probably the most common, but have you pictured the most beautiful sunsets with exquisite colors of pink, orange and blue? Have you imagined floating on the Zambezi River, passing the resident hippos, elephants and buffalo along the riverbanks? How about enjoying a gourmet feast in a beautiful vineyard in the wine country? I always find it funny when I leave for a trip to Africa, people tell me "have fun in the jungle!" I've been there several times, and I have yet to step foot in a jungle. Savannahs are more like it!

Mayan Riviera, Mexico

I rang in the New Year with my family in Mexico! We spent a relaxing week in the Mayan Riviera, located south of Cancun, in the Yucatan Peninsula. We stayed at the all-inclusive Barcelo Maya Palace Resort, a great place for families. The resort is located on one of the best beaches in the area. The sand is powdery soft but there are also areas of coral reef, which make for great snorkeling and even turtle sightings! I enjoyed sunning at one of the expansive pools while sipping a mojito, prepared expertly by bartender, Ulisses. I also did the yoga stretch classes and paddled a kayak to try and avert disaster from the all-you-can-eat buffets.

My vacation wasn't all fun and games - I took some time to check out some other luxury properties in the area. I toured the Maroma Resort and Spa by Orient-Express - Loved their fabulous Sian Nah suites with ocean front views and private plunge pools. The resort is very romantic and you can arrange a private dinner on the rooftop Mirador, lit only by moonlight, with breathtaking views of the ocean.

The Rosewood Mayakoba is an all-suite property built among lagoons and jungle located just north of Playa del Carmen. You are transported from the striking lobby by either boat or golf cart to your contemporary 700 sq. ft. suite. There, you will enjoy your own private pool, sundeck, spacious bath and elegant decor. They also have a luxury spa and expansive fitness center.

Just up the beach is the Mandarin Oriental Riviera Maya. I was struck by the sleek, clean lines of the lobby surrounded by calming reflecting pools. This resort transports you by continuously running golf carts between the lobby, guest rooms and beach. Their spa features treatments and therapies from around the world. Nice fitness area with a Kinesis studio (a series of pulleys and cables for a great core workout). The pool area has comfy looking beds and chaise lounges and overlooks the narrow beach.

Florida fling

Spent a few chilly days in Florida last week, but I was happy to have the chance to visit the Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach. They have an incredible spa which opened this past March. At 42,000 square feet, it's the largest hotel spa in the Ritz-Carlton chain. Their treatment rooms can hardly be called rooms - most are spacious suites complete with private outdoor gardens, showers and daybeds. The experience is very personalized: you choose the color of lighting you prefer in the room, and you can choose your fragrance and type of scrub from the Scrub and Polish bar. I was also impressed with their kids program. They have all day activities for the little ones, but this is one of the few places I've seen that addresses the needs of that often forgotten group: the teenager. There is a dedicated space just for teens, with the latest in computers, video games and a DJ booth, where they can actually learn how to work the boards! Looked fun.
The hotel and rooms are beautiful. I like the fact that the lobby feels just like a living room, a warm and inviting place to relax or gather with friends.

The Brazilian

It's not what you think! Earlier this month I spent some time traveling around Brazil and I will highlight two top destinations.

The Ponta dos Ganchos resort is a place you dream about. 28 individual bungalows perched on a hillside, the resort nestled between quaint fishing villages, overlooking the magnificent blue ocean. We were greeted by the congenial staff with a welcome glass of champagne. Ok, I admit, I can be easily won over by a glass of bubbly, but it just got better from there! We were ushered to our suite which literally took my breath away. Our 1400 square foot villa came complete with beautifully appointed living area, fireplace, huge flat screen TV, jacuzzi, sauna (in the room!), double shower, his/hers dressing areas and private garden with plunge pool. Did I mention the luxurious high thread count linens and wonderfully comfy beds? It was hard to drag myself away, but in the name of research, I headed down to the beach. The resort is inclusive with regards to meals and many activities. They offer fishing, sailing, tennis, kayaks, indoor heated swimming pool and a fitness center. The meals were deliciously prepared with many choices of fresh seafood and Brazilian specialties on the menu. The guests may dine whenever they like and aren't forced into set mealtimes, which makes for a very relaxed and personalized atmosphere. They even have a private island where one couple each night can dine alone for a very special romantic evening. The Ponta dos Ganchos is a perfect place for a honeymoon, anniversary or a well-deserved vacation. It is an adult-only resort and they do not accept children under age 18. The resort is located 50-minutes by car from the Florianopolis airport, which is an easy one hour flight from either Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro.

Iguassu Falls is a stunning series of 275 waterfalls bordering the countries of Brazil and Argentina. A direct flight to Foz do Iguassu takes less than two hours from Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro. The place to stay is the newly renovated Hotel das Cataratas by Orient-Express. It is a quick 20-minute drive from the airport and the only hotel located within the Iguassu National Park on the Brazilian side. This gives you unlimited access and allows you to have the falls all to yourself after hours, without the crowds of tourists. The guest rooms and public areas have been completely redone, using Brazilian hardwoods and Portuguese tiles to create a soothing atmosphere in harmony with the tropical rainforest surroundings. The pool area offers a nice respite after a morning of exploring, and the staff offering cold towels is a welcome amenity, which is the type of service I have come to expect from an Orient-Express hotel. There is a tour desk located right at the hotel from which you can book private guided tours of the falls, boat trips, helicopter rides, and a variety of more adventurous activities. Iguassu falls is a must-see destination for travelers to South America!

Tip: When in Brazil, you must try a caipirinha, a delicious cocktail of muddled fresh limes, sugar and cachaca, the local liquor. My favorite is the caipiroska, made with vodka!
